Lichtenau Castle
Lichtenau was a princely fiefdom in the Middle Ages. Berthold de Lichtenowe, a ministerialis of the Babenbergs, is documented in 1157.
The last of his family was Ludwig von Lichtenau, who is mentioned several times in Zwettl documents between 1283 and 1305. He was probably inherited by the Lichtenegger family, who were related to the Lichtenauers. From 1429, the Lords of Jaispitz and Kunstadt owned the dominion. In 1509, Leopold von Neidegg bought the estate. In 1581, Johann Hartmann von Trauttmansdorff came into possession of Lichtenau through marriage. In 1673, Ferdinand Ernst Graf Herberstein bought the dominions. Via Johann Graf Stiebar (1792), they came to Anton Edler von Meidl in 1803. In 1812, Joseph Michael von Ehrenfels acquired the dominion.
The castle is still owned by the family today. It serves as a residence and the center of the associated estate.
