Leuzendorf Castle

Leuzendorf Castle is located on the edge of the Burgpreppach district of Leuzendorf in the Haßberge district in Lower Franconia. The three-story mansard-roofed building was formerly surrounded by a moat and has been undergoing extensive renovation since 2004.

In 1358, the village was already subject to tithes to the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. In the 16th century, the fief was granted to the Fuchs and von Leineck families. In 1589, Prince-Bishop Julius Echter enfeoffed Christoph Heinrich von Erthal with the lordship, which became the seat of the Leuzendorf line of this old family. After the extinction of the lineage (1805), the castle passed by inheritance to the Barons von Schrottenberg. Later, bourgeois buyers acquired the complex. The current owner, the von Hugo family, began the elaborate renovation of the small country castle in 2004. For the successful renovation, completed in the summer of 2007, which largely respected the historical character of the building, the von Hugo family was selected by the Hypo-Kulturstiftung as one of three main prize winners of the eponymous Monument Prize 2007.
