Leubnitz Castle

Leubnitz, located on the old road from Plauen to Schleiz, is surrounded by ponds and water-rich meadow grounds. Already over a hundred years ago, visitors praised the garden laid out south of the castle around 1890 with its "two houses for exotic plants". Even today, the historic Elmbachtal landscape park is one of the most remarkable park complexes in the Saxon Vogtland. The 12.6 ha well-maintained castle park with old trees and two ponds invites you to hike and linger.

In addition to the park, the castle, newly built in 1794, a two-story rectangular building with fine pilasters and a classical "White Hall", is worth seeing. The earliest owners of the castle are named as the Lords of Röder, a formerly wealthy family in the Vogtland.

From the Lords of Röder, Leubnitz came to the Trützschler in the 16th century, who sold the estate to Wilhelm Melchior von Bodenhausen auf Mühltroff at the beginning of the 17th century. The von Bodenhausen family owned significant estates and maintained a princely household in Mühltroff. However, with the death of Otto Georg in 1764, the lineage died out, and the Mühltroff dominion with Leubnitz came through the marriage of Ottonie Eleonore von Bodenhausen to Karl Erdmann von Kospoth, after Leubnitz had received "sovereign grace, even the female fiefs".

In 1763, a fire damaged the old manor house. However, since the owners at the time lived in Mühltroff, they only made makeshift repairs to the building. It was not until Rittmeister Heinrich Wilhelm von Kospoth inherited the Leubnitz estate in 1792 and took up residence there that he had the small manor house demolished and the current castle built in the early classical style. The estate remained in the family's possession until the land reform.

Today, the castle houses the tourist information center and the permanent exhibition "Nature and Hunting". The park and castle are listed as a protected ensemble.
