Leopoldsdorf Castle

Leopoldsdorf is first mentioned in a document in 1140. The feudal lords were the Babenbergs. Duke Frederick II the Quarrelsome enfeoffed the knight Tannhäuser with the estate.

In 1293, Ortulf von Leupolzdorf named himself after the property. Around 1358, the Counts of Pfannberg were the owners of the castle. In 1389, Reinprecht von Haslau sold his fief to the Viennese citizen Ulrich dem Zinken. He was followed by the Viennese citizen family Würfel, who still owned Leopoldsdorf in 1447. Around the middle of the 15th century, robber knights established themselves here. They were driven out around 1470 by Knight Ruprecht Creuzer, who was then appointed as administrator. Hans Marx von Beckh acquired the lordship in 1523.

Beckh succeeded in converting the hitherto princely fief into free allodial property. The builder of the current castle was Hieronymus Freiherr von Beckh, who had the old castle rebuilt in the Renaissance style into a regular quadrangular building in 1581. His son Joachim sold Leopoldsdorf in 1600 to Christoph Freiherr Pettheo von Gerse. After two further owners (Maria Freiin von Tyriak in 1606 and Katharina Freiin von Concin in 1617), the castle came into the possession of the Freiherren von Fünfkirchen in 1643. In 1683, Leopoldsdorf was devastated by the Turks. From 1713 onwards, the castle owners changed quite frequently.

From 1802 to 1825, the lordship belonged to Constantin Ritter von Böckh. Subsequently, Archduke Karl was in possession of the estate. In 1825, he commissioned the architect Josef Kornhäusel to carry out extensive adaptation works. From 1839 to 1883, the Freiherren von Sina, known as bankers, were the lords of the castle. For some years, Georg Heinrich von Mautner Markhof was then the lord of the manor in Leopoldsdorf. In 1889, Baron Emmerich Waechter took over the property. He had the castle significantly altered again in the Historicist style. After a longer period of vacancy, Dr. Michael Müller acquired the castle in 2007 and extensively restored it. It serves him as the headquarters for his group of companies.
