Leonstain Castle

Schloss Leonstein is a castle in the northern part of the municipality of Pörtschach am Wörthersee, located on the main street of the spa town. It bears the house number 228.

The elongated, structured two-story building dates back to the 16th century at its core and was probably the manor farm of Leonstein Castle. Renovations in the 19th and 20th centuries were adapted to the Renaissance style. The property is privately owned by the Neuscheller family and is now run as the "Schloss Leonstain" hotel. The five or six-axis building encloses a small inner courtyard with a fountain and Renaissance lions. On the upper floor, there is a circumferential arcaded gallery supported by corbels; one room on the upper floor features profiled frame stucco on its flat ceiling and was created in 1598. On the west wing, a covered corner balcony with an onion dome from 1937 attracts attention. The street-side wing presents the entrance gate, above which one can see the Leonstain coat of arms fresco and the inscription 1598. The additions on the east side are modern; their facade structure with arcades on Renaissance columns dates from 1956 and 1972. The eastern forecourt with a roof turret originated in 1964, and a stylistically adapted annex on the northeast corner was built in 1956.

In the outer castle courtyard stands a monument to Johannes Brahms, commemorating the artist's multiple stays in Pörtschach. It was created in 1907 by Berta Kupelwieser, the wife of Karl Kupelwieser.
