Lengberg Castle

The first documented mention of Lengberg Castle dates to 1190, when it was owned by the Counts of Lechsgemünd, a Swabian noble family. Historians surmise they built the castle to manage their estates. In 1207, Count Heinrich von Lechsgemünd sold the castle to Archbishop Eberhard of Salzburg. After Heinrich's death in 1212, Lengberg fell to the Archdiocese of Salzburg, which appointed a castellan there and established the Lengberg court. Between 1480 and 1485, under Virgil von Graben, the castle underwent extensive Gothic renovations, adding a floor and consecrating a castle chapel. In the 18th century, the complex progressively decayed, and the court moved. After the dissolution of the Archdiocese of Salzburg in 1803, Lengberg changed hands multiple times and was dissolved in 1812. From 1821, it was privately owned and served, among other things, as an altar workshop and a lazaret. In the 20th century, the castle was renovated by a Dutch banker, later expropriated, and returned to the May family after World War II. In 1956, the State of Tyrol acquired the complex and entrusted it to the Aufbauwerk der Jugend (Youth Development Organization). A general renovation starting in 2008 made the castle accessible and led to spectacular archaeological finds, including well-preserved 15th-century bras.

Lengberg Castle is located at approximately 667 meters above sea level in the municipality of Nikolsdorf in the Lienz district, in the Tyrol region, Austria.

Lengberg Castle is currently in private ownership and is used by the Aufbauwerk der Jugend. It is barrier-free accessible and houses a newly furnished castle chapel.
