Lehnhausen Castle

Lenhausen was first mentioned in 1285 as the seat of a noble family and has been the ancestral seat of the von Plettenberg-Lenhausen family continuously since 1457. The building history is largely unclear; the medieval core building was expanded and extended in the second half of the 17th century.

The three-story quarry stone building, surrounded by a moat and flanked by three towers, with an outer bailey, stands on an irregular floor plan. The date 1664 can be found on coat of arms stones and wall anchors. Extensive renovation work was carried out in 1672-1673 and 1874 after a longer period of vacancy. The staircase wing was added in 1927. A fundamental renovation was undertaken from 1974 to 1981. The two-winged farm building on the outer bailey is dated 1677 and 1880. The Rentamt (steward's office) with loopholes and renewed brick stepped gables is covered with a half-hipped roof. The building's core probably dates from the 17th or 18th century. Noteworthy is the altar with a carved altarpiece in the castle chapel, dated 1678.
