Ledenburg Castle
Ledenburg Castle is a moated castle presumably dating from the 15th century, located in the municipality of Bissendorf in the Lower Saxon district of Osnabrück.
Ledenburg Castle is situated about 500 m north-northeast of the Bissendorf district of Nemden and about 500 m south of the Bissendorf hamlet of Halle. Slightly southeast of the wooded Haller Berg (108.6 m), it is located at approximately 78 m above sea level on the Hüppelbruchgraben, which feeds the castle moat and a pond situated slightly below the castle, before flowing directly into the Hase river.
Ledenburg Castle was presumably built in the 15th century after the destruction of Holter Burg under the name Neue Burg Holte (New Holte Castle). As this castle was used as a residence by the Leden family, it later received the name Ledenburg Castle.
In 1618, the castle was severely damaged by a fire and was rebuilt between 1618 and 1627. With the extinction of the von Leden family, it temporarily passed to the von Hammerstein family, who also owned Gesmold Castle, and then to the Counts of Münster. Since 1951, it has been owned by the Homann manufacturing family from Dissen.
Castle Complex+
Today, Ledenburg Castle, surrounded by moats, consists of two wings of the main house with a pre-built tower. The gatehouse, along with the outbuildings, formed an outer bailey. A sandstone oriel supported by massive consoles, which probably served to monitor the entrance, along with the entrance adorned with pilasters, represents the only external decoration of the castle.
Inside the west wing is an elegant three-flight staircase. This is an early North German example of this then-new staircase form, which replaced the spiral staircases of the Weser Renaissance. Also noteworthy are a fireplace decorated with stone figures and several porcelain tile stoves.
