Le Landeron Castle

Le Landeron Castle, a prominent historical structure, stands in the municipality of Le Landeron in the canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Its construction began in 1325 as part of the town's founding on an island between the Grande and Petite Thielle rivers, distinguished by its strategic integration into the town's fortifications.
History+
The construction of Le Landeron Castle commenced in 1325, coinciding with the founding of the town of Le Landeron. It was built on an island between the two arms of the Thielle river and deliberately placed within the town walls to reinforce the defensive structures in the northwest. The building, which rises one story above the surrounding houses, is constructed from large limestone blocks, still visible on its facades. Historically, it came into the possession of the St. Mauritzius citizens' commune, which undertook extensive renovations between 1889 and 1891, including the installation of Neo-Gothic windows and the replacement of a courtyard wall with a wrought-iron gate. The original corner tower was reduced to the height of the rest of the building during this period. Due to the Jura Water Correction and the building's advanced age, subsidence damage occurred, leading to increased maintenance needs. As the citizens' commune could no longer bear the costs, the castle was transferred to the political municipality in 2010.
