Laudon Castle

The castle's origins date back to 1130, when the Lords of Hadersdorf were first documented, and a fortified structure likely existed on this site. After changing hands multiple times, the estate came into the possession of the sovereign in 1358, who used it as a residence for the respective forest master. In 1529, the castle was destroyed during the First Turkish Siege but was subsequently rebuilt. Following further changes in ownership, Eleonora of Mantua, wife of Emperor Ferdinand III, acquired the castle in 1654. After sustaining damage during the Second Turkish Siege in 1683, it was rebuilt as an early Baroque moated castle by its new owner, court official Andreas Schellerer. In 1708, Elisabeth Christine, the future wife of Emperor Charles VI, spent two nights here, commemorated by a Latin inscription in the staircase. The castle received its current appearance in 1744 under Franz Wilhelm Schellerer. Field Marshal Ernst Gideon von Laudon acquired the castle in 1776 and resided there until his death in 1790. It remained in the family's possession until 1925.

Laudon Castle is located in the 14th district of Penzing in Vienna, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 241 meters above sea level.

Today, Laudon Castle houses the Federal Administration Academy and is not publicly accessible. Only parts of the gatehouse facing Mauerbachstraße serve as a restaurant.
