Lannach Castle

The Lannachers were originally a free noble family. In the 12th century, they built a fortified court on their own land, whose task was to control the important road from Graz to the Radelpass. Herbord von Lannach is first mentioned as the lord of the castle in 1245.

In the 13th century, the Lannachers entered into a ministerial relationship with the sovereign. However, the court remained free property. As the last of his family, Andree Lannacher fell in battle against the Hungarians in 1480. However, the dominion had already passed to the related Galler family in the first half of the 15th century. Christof Galler converted the small fortified building into today's castle between 1590 and 1610.

In 1714, a fire caused great damage to the castle. Josef von Galler ran into economic difficulties in the first half of the 18th century. In 1749, he had to hand over all his possessions to his creditors. It was not until 1780 that Leopold Erhart Graf Galler managed to take over the dominion again. In 1816, Galler sold the property to Baron Karl von Mandell. In 1875, there was a forced auction, at which Michael Engelhart was awarded the bid. Already in 1877, Clemens August Freiherr von Twickl und Habixberch became the next lord of the castle. The following owner was KR Franz Kandler.

During the Second World War, the castle was expropriated. The SS operated an institute for plant genetics here. After the end of the war, the Kandler family received Lannach Castle back. It was rented to the newly founded Lannacher Heilmittel GmbH and finally bought by them. This company, along with the castle, was bought in 1966 by Leopold Bartenstein, in whose family it still remains today.
