Langenzell Castle

At the site of the estate was originally the village of Langenzell, first mentioned between 1272 and 1367. It was largely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. A permanent resettlement only succeeded again towards the beginning of the 18th century.

In 1733, Franz Joseph von Wrede, the Dilsberg bailiff and district clerk, leased the estate and developed it over the following decades into a model agricultural enterprise, which included substantial livestock farming and extensive arable farming. His son finally managed to acquire ownership of the entire district by 1762. Langenzell subsequently developed into a model agricultural estate, which, at the transition from the Electoral Palatinate to Baden, included a manor house, a forge, a distillery, a brickworks, a cooperage, and other buildings and stables.

In 1840, Count Wilhelm von Reichenbach-Lessonitz acquired the estate. In 1880, the property passed to the husband of the eldest daughter Pauline, Prince Alfred zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg (1855-1925). Several construction measures are attributed to him; for example, he had the "new castle" built between 1880 and 1883 according to plans by architects Karl Jonas Mylius and Alfred Friedrich Bluntschli. In the estate, his initials adorn the wrought-iron framed glass roof, under which the horses were harnessed. The expansion of the nursery is also attributable to his commitment.

In 1913, he leased the estate, with the exception of the "new castle" and the nursery, to the Süddeutsche-Zucker-AG, a business relationship that lasted until 1990. Langenzell was sold in 2010 by the Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg family to a Heidelberg real estate company.
