Lahm Castle

The history of the building, now known as "Schloss Lichtenfels," dates back to the 13th century. Originally, a medieval moated castle stood on this site, serving as the ancestral seat of the noble family "von Lichtenfels." Little is known about its exact appearance, but archaeological finds suggest a robust defensive structure with thick walls and a central keep.

Destruction and Reconstruction

During the Thirty Years' War, the castle suffered severe damage. Swedish troops plundered and burned it in 1632, leaving behind only ruins. For decades, the site remained desolate until the early 18th century, when the family decided to rebuild it.

The Baroque palace was built in 1710 by Adam Gottlob von Lichtenfels. He commissioned the renowned architect Johann Michael Fischer, who designed a magnificent three-winged complex. The new building reflected the taste and status of the Enlightenment era, with its symmetrical facades, ornate decorations, and spacious interiors.

Architectural Features

• Main Portal: Adorned with the family crest and allegorical figures.
• Grand Staircase: An impressive, two-flight staircase leading to the main floor.
• Ballroom: A lavishly decorated hall with stucco ceilings and frescoes.
• Palace Chapel: A small, intimate chapel with a Baroque altar.

Over the centuries, Schloss Lichtenfels underwent several modifications. In the 19th century, parts of the interior were redesigned in the Neoclassical style. After World War II, the palace served as a hospital for a few years.

Today, Schloss Lichtenfels is owned by the state and houses a museum dedicated to regional history and art. It is also a popular venue for concerts, exhibitions, and other cultural events. The palace gardens, designed in the French style, invite visitors to stroll and relax.
