La Corbière Castle (Estavayer-le-Lac)

The earliest mention of La Corbière is found in a cadastral plan from 1746, which identifies Francois-Joseph Demiere as the owner. In 1830, Nicolas von Boccard married the daughter of Georges-Antoine Endrion, whose family owned the estate at that time. The Endrion family, citizens of Estavayer since the 14th century and represented in the Fribourg patriciate from 1783, owned the property until the end of the 18th century. Georges-Antoine Endrion, a lieutenant colonel in the Swiss Guard in the service of Louis XVI, survived the massacre of 1792 and was instrumental in a failed escape attempt by the king. Between 1809 and 1828, he served as a legal advisor for Estavayer. In 1865, La Corbière passed from the Endrion family to the von Boccard family. Between 1880 and 1901, the castle was rented to the Countess von Pourtalès, who had a chapel built in the park in 1880. After her death in 1901, the castle served as temporary accommodation for the Sacré-Coeur boarding school from 1902 to 1905. From 1903, it was rented for over 40 years to the Misses von La Rive and Roberty, who operated a horticultural school there. In 1917, the property was sold to Léon Marmy and Joseph Baudin, with the farmhouse burning down in the same year. Léon Marmy built a new residential house in 1920, while the Baudin family resided in the nearby 16th-century manor house. In 1925, the area was divided. In 1929, Jeanne-Alexandrine von La Rive, the head of the horticultural school, became the owner of the castle and its immediate surroundings. From 1946 to 1987, the castle was owned by the Fathers of Saint Francois de Sales, who operated a small seminary and later a secondary school there. In 1993, the property was converted into a health center.

La Corbière Castle is located in Estavayer-le-Lac in the Broye district in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It stands at an elevation of approx. 464 m above sea level.
