Kyburg Castle

The first documented mention of Kyburg occurred in 1027 as "Chuigeburg." Liutfried II of Winterthur is considered its probable builder. In 1025, the castle served as a refuge for Count Werner of Winterthur during his rebellion against Emperor Conrad II, after which it was conquered and destroyed by the emperor in 1027. Following the extinction of the Winterthur line, the inheritance passed to the House of Dillingen through marriage. Count Hartmann I of Dillingen, later known as Hartmann I of Kyburg, gained significant influence through further marriages and the extinction of other noble families. In 1263, the Kyburg line died out, and their inheritance fell to the Habsburgs. After Rudolf of Habsburg's election as German King, Kyburg lost importance but served as a repository for the Imperial Regalia between 1273 and 1325. In 1424, the city of Zurich acquired the Kyburg county and used the castle as the seat of a bailiff until 1798. After the Helvetic Republic and a plundering by farmers in 1798, Kyburg became the seat of a district office in 1815. In 1832, the Canton of Zurich auctioned off the castle, and after several private owners who saved it from demolition and opened it as a museum, the Canton of Zurich repurchased the complex in 1917. Since 1999, the museum has been operated by the "Museum Schloss Kyburg" association.

Kyburg Castle is located in the municipality of Kyburg in the Pfäffikon district, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 628 m above sea level.
