Kuenburg Castle (Tamsweg) is located in the municipality of Tamsweg in the Lungau region of Salzburg (Kirchengasse 107).

Christoph III von Kuenburg was appointed administrator of Moosham in 1556, marking the beginning of this family's acquisition of properties in Lungau. Kuenburg Castle was created through the purchase and renovation of several houses, which had existed since the 15th century, by the Kuenburg family, who sought to establish a center of their dominion here. Christoph III concluded an inheritance contract with his brother Erasam, which divided the family's properties into the Kuenburg-Tamsweg and Kuenburg-Neukirchen lines. In 1681, a fideicommissum was established, which, although abolished in 1812 during the Bavarian occupation of Salzburg, de facto existed until 1954.

The castle was owned by: Christoph IV (1584), Georg Carl, Reichardt, Erasam and Christoph V (1592), Christoph VI Sigmund (1640, son of Reichardt), Johann Christoph VI (1704), Johann Maximilian Siegmund (1735), Johann Nepomuk Christoph Karl (1773), Franz Kaspar Wilhelm (1789, brother of Johann), Alois Johann Nepomuk (1809), Wilhelm Caspar Ludwig (1839), Alois Josef Ferdinand (1870), Therese, née Goes, Karoline Countess Cerrini, née Kuenburg, and Baroness Bertha Wucherer (1874), Alois (1884), Marianne Baroness Buddenbrock (daughter of Alois), and Wilhelm Kuenburg (son of Therese) (1885), in 1886 the seven children of Baroness Wucherer and her husband Erich Baron Buddenbrock, in 1907 Marianne Buddenbrock alone, in 1933 Siegfried Kuenburg-Ungersbach from the Bohemian line, in 1946 Eberhard Kuenburg by donation.

Construction History of Kuenburg Castle+

The first houses here were a wooden house with a bathhouse and a brick storage building from 1450, as well as a so-called "Stöckl" from 1419. The conversion of the purchased houses into a palace was completed in 1598. This building was severely damaged by the market fire of 1742 but was rebuilt in the form of a Baroque palace by the Lambrecht master builder Fidelis Hainzl. Important artists of the time contributed to the redesign, such as the painter Gregor Lederwasch IV, the stucco artist Giovanni Gaetano Androi, who created the main portal; the Salzburg blacksmith Philipp Hinterseer created the wrought-iron alliance coat of arms Kuenburg-Rollingen for the entrance gate. The castle park, laid out in 1745 with its old trees, has since been re-designated. In the house entrance, there is an inscription from the Capuchin church, demolished in 1790, which commemorates the builder of this church from 1671, Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg.

Kuenburg Castle Today+

In 1954, the market town of Tamsweg bought the castle. Today, the palace serves as a cultural center, housing, among other things, the entan Tauern cinema. The Lungau Cultural Association and the Tamsweg Public Library are also located in Kuenburg Castle. In 2013, a fundamentally revised redesign as a cultural center is being discussed.
