Krzyżtopór Castle

Krzyżtopór Castle was built between 1627 and 1644 on behalf of Krzysztof Ossoliński, the Voivode of Sandomierz, with Lorenzo Senes overseeing the construction. The builder died just one year after its completion. His son and heir, Krzysztof Baldwin Ossoliński, fell in the Battle of Zborów in 1649, after which the estate passed to the Denhoff and Kalinowski families. Between 1655 and 1657, the castle suffered significant destruction by Swedish troops, resulting in only the west wing being partially rebuilt. Later, the noble families Morsztyn, Wiśniowiecki, and Pac inhabited the complex. In 1777, during the Bar Confederation, Krzyżtopór was again destroyed by Russian troops. After 1787, when Stanisław Sołtyk was the last known resident, the buildings became uninhabitable. During World War II, the ruin served as a hiding place for partisans. After the war, the state took over the property, and initial reconstructions began in 1971. A comprehensive reconstruction plan from 1980 was halted in 1981 due to martial law. Today, about 90% of the original walls remain, and parts of the ruins are temporarily covered.

Krzyżtopór Castle is located in Ujazd, in the Opatów County of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship (Wschodni), Poland, at an elevation of approximately 269 m above sea level.

Visitors can explore the imposing ruins of Krzyżtopór Castle today. Although it is now a ruin, large parts of the original walls are preserved, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.
