Kronborg Castle

The origins of Kronborg date back to 1420, when Eric of Pomerania had the Krogen fortress built on this site, initially consisting of a square wall with watchtowers. From 1429, it was used to collect the Sound Toll from passing ships. King Frederick II of Denmark had the medieval complex significantly expanded between 1574 and 1585 in the Nordic Renaissance style. After initial planning by Hans van Paeschen, the construction was completed under Anton van Obberghen. In 1577, the fortress received its current name, Kronborg. A devastating fire in 1629 almost completely destroyed the castle; only the chapel remained untouched. Under Christian IV, reconstruction was carried out by Hans van Steenwinckel, lasting until 1639 and largely restoring the original condition. During the Second Northern War, Kronborg was captured by Swedish troops in 1658 and occupied until 1660. Between 1688 and 1690, Lambert van Haven further reinforced the fortress, making it one of the strongest of its time. From 1785, Kronborg no longer served as a royal residence but exclusively as a barracks and fortress. With the abolition of the Sound Toll in 1847, the complex lost most of its military significance. The Danish military finally withdrew in 1991. Since 2000, Kronborg has been a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Kronborg Castle is located in Helsingør in the Hovedstaden capital region, Denmark, at an elevation of approximately 11 meters above sea level.
