Kromsdorf Castle
Kromsdorf Castle is an impressive Renaissance castle located in the Thuringian municipality of Kromsdorf, northeast of Weimar. This historic edifice, once a knight's seat, is distinguished by its rich history and architectural evolution, making it a remarkable testament to past eras.
History+
Originally, a small manor house stood on the site of the current rectory. In 1580, Georg Albrecht von Kromsdorf had the castle built south of the church. A significant second construction phase began in 1666 under Johann Theodor de Mortaigne, who expanded the castle to its current form by adding west and east wings. During this period, the garden wall in the castle park was also adorned with 64 niches for busts. In 1904, Chamberlain Erich von Conta acquired the estate, had utility buildings demolished, and erected a carriage house with stables, preserving the castle's core structure while undertaking renovations on the ground floor.
