Kreisbach Castle

Kreisbach Castle is a castle in Lower Austria in the urban area of Wilhelmsburg. It was first mentioned in writing in 1172 and has been revitalized by the Kulturverein Schloss Kreisbach (Kreisbach Castle Cultural Association) for several years.

The castle, which was originally surrounded by a castle wall and had four towers, was built at the end of the 12th century by Dietericus I. de Crewspach. It then served as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Kreisbach. However, the owners changed several times over the centuries. It was owned by the Hohenbergers, the Roggendorfers, and the Jörgers. In 1625, it became the property of Lilienfeld Abbey.

Revitalization since 1999

Since its founding in 1999, the Kulturverein Schloss Kreisbach has been dedicated to the renovation of the castle. In December 2000, the association concluded a 99-year lease agreement with Lilienfeld Abbey as the owner.

For a long time, the only developed road at this point in the Kreisbach valley, Landesstraße 5117, passed through the castle gate. Since the passage was only 2.4 m wide and 2.9 m high, trucks had to use a gravel path. In October 2001, the almost one-kilometer-long bypass was opened to traffic, with costs amounting to 350,000 Euros.

In 2004, the state of Lower Austria decided to support the renovation of the Annakapelle (St. Anne's Chapel) with 53,000 Euros. In the same year, the cultural association was awarded the Cultural Heritage Prize of ORF Niederösterreich for the exemplary renovation, especially of the chapel.

Since 2008, the former castle granary has been reopened. It has a total area of 200 m², is equipped with a stage, and serves as an event venue.
