Kornberg Castle

In the second half of the 12th century, the Knights of Riegersburg-Wildon commissioned their vassals, the Lords of Kornberg, to build the castle. In 1284, a Friedrich von Kornberg is first documented as a vassal of the Wildoners.

After their decline, the Wallseer were the liege lords of the Kornbergers. For financial reasons, Ortolf von Kornberg had to sell the castle to the Wallseers in 1308. Like Riegersburg, Kornberg was a princely fief, which Duke Otto entrusted to Ulrich von Wallsee in 1331. He passed it on as a sub-fief to Ulrich von Graben, whose descendants lived here for over 200 years. They further expanded the fortifications.

Andrä, the last representative of the Knights of Graben, bequeathed the castle to his cousin Helfrich von Kainach in 1543. Now a lengthy dispute erupted between the Kainachs and the Lords of Stadl, who also laid claim to the inheritance. The latter finally prevailed in 1584. In 1627, the dominion temporarily fell to the Barons of Kollonitsch. In 1638, however, the Stadl family managed to take over Kornberg again through a settlement. In 1660, the castle was described as dilapidated. The Stadls rebuilt Kornberg in the 18th century and gave it its present appearance. They owned the dominion until 1825.

After the death of Baron Leopold von Stadl, Prince Johann I von und zu Liechtenstein bought it. His son Franz sold the already somewhat dilapidated castle in 1871 to Charles Francois Conte Bardeau, who had it restored in the style of the time. His descendants are still the owners of the castle today.
