Klingenstein Castle
Klingenstein Castle is located at an altitude of 553 meters above sea level in the Blautal valley on a mountain spur in Klingenstein, a district of Blaustein in the Alb-Donau-Kreis, Baden-Württemberg.
Klingenstein Castle was built in 1756 by Baron Franz Maria Anton von Bernhausen on the foundations and old cellar vaults of the northern castle of Klingenstein Castle. After the expansion of Oberherrlingen Castle, the Lords of Bernhausen had moved their main residence there in 1588. Klingenstein Castle changed owners several times. Among other things, it came to Bavaria in 1803.
In 1860, the Ulm pharmacist Ernst Gustav Leube bought the small castle, which was intended for demolition, from the municipality of Klingenstein. Leube is also known as the founder of the German cement industry. The castle became the summer residence of the Leube-Schall family.
Current State+
Klingenstein Castle today consists of the inhabited castle with the castle chapel of the Holy Trinity and the castle courtyard. To the south of it is the forester's house in the former neck ditch. A western transverse building was demolished in 1860. To the south and west of Klingenstein Castle are the remains of the former Klingenstein Castle. The castle courtyard and the castle remains can be visited.
Inside, remnants of the stucco decorations on the ceilings, the staircase, and the interior of the castle chapel clearly show the Rococo style. The altarpiece in the chapel is by Johann Baptist Enderle from Söflingen.
The Leube Foundation, a civil law foundation, has been responsible for the preservation of Klingenstein Castle with all its associated facilities and institutions since 1974. In 1983, the association "Friends of Klingenstein Castle" was founded.
