Klingenberg Castle

Klingenberg Castle is located on the right bank of the Main River on a ridge about one kilometer south of the municipality of Wipfeld and was first mentioned in 1230. From the 13th century, it served as the official residence of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. It was completely destroyed in the German Peasants' War in 1525. Under Prince-Bishop Konrad III von Bibra, reconstruction took place until 1543. The official residence was moved to the neighboring Schwanfeld in 1792. In 1805, the municipality of Wipfeld acquired Klingenberg. After being sold to a private individual in 1829, ownership changed several times. After the Second World War, Dürkopp-Werke AG Bielefeldt established the Hermann-Barthel-Heim as a recreation center for employees. Since the 1970s, the castle has once again served as a family residence.

The three-story, three-wing complex with gable ends and a trapezoidal inner courtyard, as well as the neck ditch system with a stone bridge, have largely been preserved to this day.
