The Historic Building: A Journey Through Time+
From Medieval Water Castle to Baroque Palace+

The castle was rebuilt in 1711-12 on the remains of the medieval water castle, which was heavily damaged in the Peasants' War, into a Baroque palace by the Holzapfel family.

Architectural Features and Interior Design+

Baroque Grandeur

The Baroque reconstruction gave the castle its present appearance. The main building, a three-story structure with a mansard roof, is flanked by two lower, two-story wings. The facade is adorned with rich stucco decorations, including pilasters, cornices, and window pediments.

Interior Highlights

Inside, several rooms have preserved their original Baroque decor. The grand hall, with its ceiling frescoes and elaborate stucco work, is particularly impressive. Other notable rooms include the "Green Salon" and the "Chinese Cabinet," both featuring exquisite wall coverings and furniture from the period.

A Turbulent History+

The Peasants' War and Reconstruction

The medieval water castle, first mentioned in 1287, played a significant role in regional conflicts. Its near-total destruction during the Peasants' War in 1525 marked a turning point. The subsequent Baroque reconstruction symbolized the family's renewed prosperity and influence.

Later Modifications and Uses

Over the centuries, the castle underwent various modifications. In the 19th century, some rooms were redecorated in the Neoclassical style. After World War II, the castle served as a temporary hospital and later as a school. Since 1980, it has been a museum, open to the public.

The Castle Today: A Cultural Monument+

Today, the castle is a protected cultural monument and a popular destination for history and art enthusiasts. It hosts permanent exhibitions on its history and architecture, as well as special exhibitions and cultural events. The castle park, designed in the English landscape style, invites visitors for leisurely strolls.
