The castle was built in the Middle Ages. In 1510, Laurentius Reiß von Lilienfeld, abbot of Lilienfeld Abbey, acquired the Klafterbrunn estate and developed it as a summer residence for the Lords of Lilienfeld. The castle received its current form during the Empire period. Later, the castle was the seat of the Counts of Walderdorff and the Princes of Fürstenberg. Since 2004, the castle has been owned by the Schmid-Schmidsfelden family.
