Klaffenau Castle
The small noble residence was built around 1560 by Hans Goldschan as a moated castle. Later owners included the Perner and Grueber families, as well as Balthasar von Klaffenau.
When the Haiducks devastated Eastern Styria in 1605, Klaffenau was also burned down. Two years later, its then owner, Balthasar Wilhelm zu Klaffenau, sold it to Vorau Abbey. The abbey had the ruin rebuilt. Further looting and arson by enemy invasions from the East occurred in 1672, 1683, 1704, and 1709. In 1725, the abbey had the complex expanded with an additional economic and residential wing and by building a large granary.
Klaffenau Castle is now privately owned. The permanent exhibition "Rural Arts and Crafts" can be visited in the castle.
