Karow Castle

The interior furnishings of the former castle were largely lost in 1945; the current furnishings, from various styles and eras, mostly come from other houses.

Apart from the estate park, about 500 m east of the castle, in a wooded area, is the partially destroyed mausoleum of the Schlutius estate owner family. This tomb, built between 1912 and 1916 by Wilhelm Wandschneider, was constructed in the style of Theodoric's Mausoleum in Ravenna. It was considered one of the most significant late Wilhelminian funerary monuments. The walls were lined with marble, the ceiling decorated with a mosaic, and the sarcophagus stood in the center. Three members of the family were buried here. In 1919, a bronze statue, depicting a grieving woman, was placed in front of the entrance. In 1945 and thereafter, the monument became a ruin, and the sarcophagus was desecrated. Parts of it are located not far from the tomb, and in another spot, three unmarked presumed burial mounds. The bronze statue "The Mourner" was saved from destruction, stood in the castle park since 1945, and has been in front of the mourning chapel of Karow churchyard since 1988. It shows a large number of bullet holes from small arms.
