Karlstein Castle
Karlstein Castle in the market town of Regenstauf in the district of Regensburg is located in the Karlstein district. The Neo-Gothic building, situated in a park, has four wings. The castle chapel of St. Ulrich is located in the south wing. A Catholic service is held here once a week. The chapel also contains the tombs of two former residents of the castle, the Lords Teuffel von Pirkensee and Hornbeck.
The castle remains in the private possession of the Counts of Drechsel to this day; it can therefore only be viewed from the outside.
In 1393, the Lords of Leuchtenberg built the castle. Over time, the ownership of the castle changed frequently. Since 1808, it has been owned by the Counts of Drechsel-Deufstetten. After 1900, the castle was extended and rebuilt, giving it its present form.
In 1632, the castle was plundered by the Swedish General Craz during the Thirty Years' War.
The Nazi resistance fighter Max Ulrich Graf von Drechsel grew up at Karlstein Castle.
