Kainbach Castle

Kainbach Castle is located in the municipality of Kainbach bei Graz in Styria. The history of the estate dates back to the second half of the 15th century, and that of the current castle to the first half of the 17th century. Today it belongs to the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God and is part of a healing and nursing institution. The castle is located in Kainbach bei Graz at Johannes von Gott-Straße 22.

Originally, a farm belonging to the Styrian provincial princes was located on the site of the present castle and was continuously expanded. In 1478, it was granted to Andree Peckh. A short time later, in 1480, it was presumably destroyed by Hungarians or Turks. In 1620, Andreas Eder von Kainbach had a small noble residence built on the site of the former farm, which he inhabited with his brother Thoman. On July 2, 1629, a requiem mass was held in the newly built court chapel, consecrated to Maria Hilf. In 1647, Eder made the estate a fideicommissum. In 1651, Ignaz Leopold von Kainbach inherited from his cousin Andreas Eder.

The first mention of a second chapel, dedicated to Saint Anthony, dates from 1730. After the death of the last male descendant of the Kainbach family, the castle became the property of the Graz Poor Clares in 1756. When their monastery was dissolved in 1782, the castle came into state ownership. Several changes of ownership followed before it came into the possession of the Graz Order of the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God on April 14, 1875, in whose possession it currently remains. It is part of a healing and nursing institution for the chronically ill.
