Kaimberg Castle

The manor house can be considered the core of the Kaimberg settlement, encompassing the largest part of the district.

The three villages of phorte (Pforten), kols (Collis) and keime (Kaimberg) fell to the Gera Vogt in 1328. The original main town was Pforten; around 1500, this became Kaimberg, giving the Lords of Kaimberg jurisdiction over the surrounding villages (until 1850 or 1852). The stately knight's seat of the Lords of Kaimberg, formerly situated high above the village, who resided there until 1852, was demolished by a later owner, a commercial councillor Schmidt from Altenburg, and replaced by a new building. A precise description of the former manor house can be found in the purchase and land assessment of the Kaimberg manor from 1741. A brewery is already documented in the 16th century, as are viticulture and a brickworks.

From 1946 to 1949, the manor house, forcibly expropriated by the communists, served as a resettlement home, and new farmer settlements were also established on the estate grounds. From 1949 to 1970, it was used as the Gera-Kaimberg Diet Sanatorium (with 70 beds), after which it housed the District Academy for Health and Social Services until 1990.
