Jormannsdorf Castle

The first documented mention of Jormannsdorf Castle was in 1591 in a letter from Christoph von Königsberg, whose family originally built the estate as a manor house. During its construction, an extensive farmstead and a private chapel were also built. A console made of grey sandstone, now visible as a copy in the castle's foyer and bearing the Königsberg coat of arms and the year 1626, commemorates the completion of the construction work by a nephew of Christoph von Königsberg. In 1620, a sermon was held at the manor house during the inauguration of a mineral spring, which was printed in Regensburg in 1621 and first documented the healing springs. Between 1624 and 1626, the castle was further expanded. In 1644, Adam I Count Batthyány acquired the property from Christoph Ehrenreich Freiherr von Königsberg. Subsequently, the castle was often leased, with tenants benefiting from the healing springs in the castle park, which turned Jormannsdorf and neighboring Tatzmannsdorf into a spa town. After the Turkish Wars, the castle served as a recovery home for wounded officers. After 1790, Joseph Emanuel Count Batthyány had the main building and the farmstead expanded and an English park laid out. The bathing establishment was sold in 1919, but the castle itself remained in the possession of the Batthyány family until 1956. From 1948 to 1956, it housed an agricultural school. Between 1956 and 1986, it was used as a castle hotel. In 1987, Kurbad Tatzmannsdorf AG acquired the castle, which was revitalized from 1993 onwards. Since 2003, it has hosted health-related training courses at the Health Academy of BFI Burgenland.

Jormannsdorf Castle is located in Bad Tatzmannsdorf-Jormannsdorf in the Oberwart district, Burgenland, Austria, at an altitude of approx. 359 m above sea level.

Today, Jormannsdorf Castle is privately owned and is a listed building. Since October 2003, it has housed the Health Academy of BFI Burgenland, which offers training in the health sector.
