Jettingen Castle

Jettingen Castle is a mighty three-story, four-wing complex with a high hip roof. It is located in the market town of Jettingen-Scheppach in the district of Günzburg. The children's and youth author Isabella Braun was born in the castle on December 12, 1815, and Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg on November 15, 1907. The castle is surrounded by an extensive English-style park.
The four-story former moated castle with four massive round corner towers was built in 1480 by Hans von Stain and subsequently rebuilt several times. A small moated castle previously stood in its place.
In 1748, Baron Johann Albrecht Schenk von Stauffenberg (Wülfingen line) acquired the feudal property, whose son Lothar Philipp Schenk von Stauffenberg made the fief his own through purchase. The castle increasingly fell into disrepair, resembling a ruin. At that time, only a single floor, as Isabella Braun reported, was still habitable, the other was in complete decay and served to store old barrels... The inner castle courtyard was sunless, damp, and cold. The side doors to the offices resembled the entrances to eerie castle dungeons; the ascent to the apartments was no less unfriendly. However, once the first flight of stairs was reached, light streamed from two sides into a long, magnificent corridor, from whose walls life-size portraits of Roman emperors stared down. The doors led into a series of stately rooms, all interconnected, bounded to the east and west by the tower bay. (quoted from Miehle 1986, p. 20)
In 1833, Franz Schenk von Stauffenberg (Amerdingen line), known as the "Excellency," inherited the property. It was he who rebuilt the dilapidated castle in 1841. In this context, the moat was filled in and the fourth floor was removed, and various outbuildings were added.
The castle came into the possession of Hieronymus Graf Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht in 2000. In 2005/2006, a renovation of previously failed restorations took place.
