Ivenack Castle, a historic building in the Mecklenburg Lake District, looks back on a turbulent history that began in the 13th century with a Cistercian convent. After its secularization and destruction in the Thirty Years' War, it was transformed into an impressive castle that, despite being vacant, retains its historical presence today.
History+
The origins of Ivenack Castle date back to 1252, when Knight Reimbern von Stove founded a Cistercian convent here. In the course of the Reformation, the convent was secularized between 1550 and 1560 and converted into a ducal office. Duke Johann VII had a castle built on this site around 1590, but it was largely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. In 1709, it came into the possession of Ernst Christoph von Koppelow through an exchange of estates, who initiated its reconstruction. Later, the estate came into the possession of the von Plessen family and then the von Maltzahn family, who expanded it to its present form in the early 19th century.
