The Irsee Manor was built in 1683 by the Imperial Abbey of Irsee near Kaufbeuren on the Way of St. James. It served as a summer residence and guesthouse. In 1842, the German journalist and publisher Johann Georg August Wirth (1798–1848) acquired it. He planned to continue his printing press, previously founded in the Römerburg, there. Due to financial problems, he had to auction off the estate in 1844. It was extensively rebuilt in 1943 and 1944 and restored in 1981.
