IJse Castle

In the 14th Century the property belonged to the lords of IJse. These were vassals of the Duke of Brabant. The last heir, Maria d'Oisy, sold the property in 1335 to John I Wittems.

From 1410 - 1456 Henry II of Wittems, married to Jacoba van glymes, lived here. His son, Henry III of Wittems (1440-1515) (also Van Beersel Wittem or van Witthem Beersel) built the castle in 1489. He married Elisabeth van der Sprout. Hereafter owners of the castle were Philip Wittem Beersel (1471-1523), Henry IV of Wittems (1495 - 1554), Georges Wittem (1500 - 1544), Anton of Wittems (1530 -. 1590), Honorine of Wittems (1580-1643) (married to Gerard van Horne), Ambrose Horne, Eugene Maximilian of Horne, Philip Emanuel Horne, Horne Maximilian Emanuel, Maria Theresa of Horne (married to Philip Joseph of Salm-Kyrburg) and Frederick III Salm-Kyrburg (Prince of Overijse - was beheaded in 1794 in Paris by revolutionaries).

1824 bought Maurice de Le Hoye, a judge in Nivelles, the possession. 1948 bought by the Belgian government the ownership and established a school in the lock-in.
