Iburg Castle, an impressive historical complex, is perched on a hill in Bad Iburg in the Osnabrück district, Lower Saxony. Originally used as a castle and later as the residence of the Bishops of Osnabrück, the castle is now a significant cultural monument that captivates visitors with its rich history and architectural diversity.

History+

The origins of Iburg Castle date back to 1070, when a castle with a wooden chapel was built on a hill. Ten years later, in 1080, a Benedictine monastery was founded there. From the 11th to the end of the 17th century, the dual complex of castle and monastery served as the residence of the Bishops of Osnabrück. In the early 17th century, the complex was transformed into a magnificent castle by Prince-Bishop Philipp Sigismund of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle suffered severe damage from looting and occupations. After the war, Bishop Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg carried out extensive renovations. A notable resident was Sophie Charlotte of Hanover, who was born here in 1668 and later became the first Queen in Prussia. The era of the bishops ended in 1673 when the princely episcopal family moved to the newly built Osnabrück Castle.
