Hunyadi Castle

Hunyadi Castle is a late Baroque castle in Maria Enzersdorf. At the end of the 16th century, a free court stood on the site of the present castle. Among the well-known owners were Dr. Sigmund von Oedt and Imperial Councillor Balthasar von Nollarn. Finally, in 1766, the Viennese merchant Joseph von Patuzzi acquired it and had the present castle built. In the same year, Empress Maria Theresia confirmed the free court privilege for the castle.

Later owners included Count Johann Josef von Seilern (1778), Landgrave Ernst von Hessen-Philippsthal (1818), Count Carl von Neipperg (1832) and Count Moritz Almásy (1837).

From 1876 to 1901, the castle was owned by Alexandrine and Count Koloman Hunyadi (1830–1901), from whom it received its current name and who were very popular in the town. Count Hunyadi was imperial chief master of ceremonies and hosted lavish parties at the castle. After his death, the castle passed to Julie Countess Boos-Waldeck, who sold it to Adalbert Baron von Lanna.

From 1930 to 1955, a biscuit and pasta factory operated in the former stables. The side wings were used by a guesthouse.

To save the historic building and the castle park from industrial use as a concrete goods factory, the municipality of Maria Enzersdorf, with the support of Niederösterreichische Siedlungswasserbau (NÖSIWAG), acquired the castle and park in a neglected state in 1961 and opened it to the public. In 2004, the castle was completely renovated by the municipality.
