Hüttenstein Castle
Hüttenstein Castle is located in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, in the village of Winkl, between Lake Wolfgangsee and Lake Mondsee. Originally, a castle built in 1329 by Archbishop Friedrich III stood on its site.
Around 1400, Hüttenstein became the seat of its own administrative court (Pflegegericht), which administered the present-day communities of St. Gilgen and Strobl on Lake Wolfgangsee, as well as Fuschl am See. The administrative court was moved to St. Gilgen around 1600.
In the 16th century, the castle was built, which, after being destroyed by a fire around 1843, was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style and received its current appearance. Hüttenstein Castle (not accessible to the public) and the adjacent Krottensee lake are privately owned; diving permits may be issued at the castle. Divers found a complete castle kitchen in Krottensee, which apparently served as a garbage dump for the castle lords for centuries.
A watercolor by Thomas Ender, depicting the castle, was part of the Gurlitt collection.
