Hünnefeld Castle
Hünnefeld Castle is located in Bad Essen in the east of the Osnabrück district, north of the Mittelland Canal between the districts of Harpenfeld and Wehrendorf.
The first documented mention of Hünnefeld took place in 1146. A moated castle was built on this site in the 13th century. An upper and lower castle are attested in the 14th century.
On March 17, 1447, the castle came into the possession of the von dem Bussche family, who had previously owned the nearby Ippenburg Castle. Through inheritance division, the lines of von dem Bussche-Ippenburg and von dem Bussche-Hünnefeld separated in 1598.
The Castle
The current manor house was built between 1600 and 1614.
The three-winged main building of the castle complex was built between 1610 and 1613 by the married couple Gerhard Clamor v. dem Bussche (1572–1614) and Hedwig v. Münchhausen (1590–1653), daughter of Hilmar d. J. von Münchhausen, following the example of Hedwig's parental home, Schwöbber Castle, using simple early Baroque forms instead of Weser Renaissance decor.
The Outbuildings
The farmyard is located opposite the main building. Among other things, it houses
the dovecote from 1701 is the most striking building. The white, round tower with a pointed roof has several entrance holes for the animals on its outer wall. It is located in the area of the first castle complex, the Uecherer Hof in Hunevelde.
the Old Rentei, formerly the financial administration office, is now used with its two floors as a café with Bed & Breakfast.
The Park
The park borders the castle to the east and was transformed into an English landscape garden in its current form in 1840. The connection to the castle is provided by the so-called "Weltinsel" (World Island), which is connected both to the castle's terrace and via a bridge to the extensive grounds.

Current Use+
The main and south wings as well as the rear garden are still used as a residence by the von dem Bussche-Hünnefeld family and are not accessible. A small museum on the history of the house and family has been set up in the north wing, which is regularly open on weekends.
Since 2006, the Hünnefeld Castle Festival Games have taken place annually in early summer on the grounds of Hünnefeld Castle. So far, the theater ensemble Poetenpack from Potsdam has performed.
