Hoya Castle

Hoya Castle is a listed building in the town of Hoya in the Nienburg district of Lower Saxony.

The three-winged complex is located on the eastern bank of the Weser. The east and west wings stand on a floor plan that essentially dates back to the Middle Ages. It is a former castle, which was already mentioned in 1233. Together with the church, it was located on a Weser island, which was only united with the town at the end of the 17th century by filling in the Weser arm. The castle was the seat of the lower county of a line of the Counts of Hoya until 1503. After their extinction, Nienburg was the seat of the Counts of Hoya. The county reverted to the Dukes of Braunschweig in 1582 as an expired fief. The castle has since been an official residence and, as such, was last of importance during the Thirty Years' War.

All windows and the tower were partly altered in a classical style in the 19th century. The freestanding central building dates from 1840. It was extended upwards in the years 1852 to 1853. The building complex was unified by a uniform coat of paint.

In 1859, the castle became the seat of the district court. After the dissolution of the Hoya district court district, the branch office of the Nienburg district court was housed here until November 2010.

On November 11, 2013, the Hoya City Council decided by 9 votes to 6 to purchase the castle with its plot of land from the State of Lower Saxony for a purchase price of 224,000 Euros.
