Hollwinkel Castle (Hedem)
Hollwinkel Castle is a castle built at the end of the 13th century in the village of Hedem, part of the town of Preußisch Oldendorf in the Minden-Lübbecke district. It is located south of the Mittelland Canal in the Alsweder Niederung.
It is presumed that Hollwinkel Castle was founded at the end of the 13th century by the Holle family, who had been expelled from the Hildesheim region. From about the beginning of the 15th century, it was owned by the von Schloen gen. Gehle family. In 1459, Hollwinkel was besieged and shelled as a western outpost of the Bishopric of Minden in a feud with Osnabrück. Stone cannonballs from this feud were found in the moats in 1871. During the Thirty Years' War, Hollwinkel was besieged by the Swedes.
After the extinction of the von Gehle family in 1758, the castle fell to the liege lord Frederick II of Prussia. He transferred it in 1758 to Baron von Asseburg, who, however, with the king's consent, sold it in 1776 to the Prussian Minister of State, Baron von der Horst. After the estate had been uninhabited from 1791 to 1830, it has been the main residence of the von der Horst family since the sale of their former seat, Haldem Castle, to this day.
Buildings and Park+
The building was fundamentally rebuilt in 1504. Further construction measures followed in the next centuries. The four-wing complex therefore consists of elements from various architectural eras. The last major renovations took place between 1870 and 1873.
The Mittelland Canal runs 100 m north of the old park boundary. The construction of the canal separated the family burial ground from the park. The water structure of the complex, designed as a moated castle, was altered after the Second World War. The Große Aue was relocated and now flows west of the castle. The castle is reached via a 200-meter-long chestnut avenue. Before reaching the actual enclosed castle, one first passes several outlying buildings, such as half-timbered houses.
Current Use+
The castle houses apartments and office spaces. Among other things, a law firm is located there.
