Hollenegg Castle

The name Hollenegg first appears in a document from Admont Abbey in 1163 with Rudolf and Rapot von Hollenegg, but the complex is likely significantly older. The first castle was probably built on an old Salzburg estate and was not very large. The Holleneggers were originally ministeriales of the Archbishop of Salzburg.

Abel von Hollenegg initiated the Renaissance renovation of the castle in 1550. The Graz Landhaus served as a model. His son Friedrich continued the construction work. When the Holleneggers died out in the male line with him in 1593, he left his widow and six daughters not only the new castle but also such high debts that large parts of the lordship had to be sold.

In 1653, Georg Christian Graf Saurau acquired Hollenegg, but had to sell it again just three years later. The buyers were the Barons von Puechbaumb. Maximilian Graf Khuenburg auf Deutschlandsberg, who came into possession of the castle in 1686, renewed a large part of the interior and commissioned the expansion of the church. Since 1821, Hollenegg has belonged to the Princes of Liechtenstein, who undertook further renovations in the 19th century. It primarily served them as a summer residence. The current owner is Prince Franz Géza von und zu Liechtenstein.
