Hohenstein Castle
Hohenstein Castle is located on a hilltop above the Glan Valley in the Austrian municipality of Liebenfels.
The castle was built in 1537 under Herrmann Kulmer and expanded around 1589 under Balthasar Kulmer. The complex is cruciform and symmetrical, with the longer east-west wing crossed by a north-south wing in the middle. Semicircular tower structures project from the ends of the former. The southwest corner is designed as a small courtyard by a two-story arcaded building and a tower projecting southward.
The stone portal dates from the year of construction 1589, the gates and windows of the main building are late Gothic. In the southern central wing there is a coupled Renaissance window.
The castle is privately owned and not publicly accessible.
Isis Noreia+
On the plateau south of the castle, the foundations of a temple complex dedicated to the Noric goddess Isis-Noreia were uncovered in 1933. A building inscription indicates a restoration of a sanctuary originally built in the early 1st century AD, in the first half of the 2nd century. Sculptures and inscriptions found at the temple complex are located in the Carinthian State Museum in Klagenfurt.
