Hohenroden Castle

Hohenroden Castle, formerly also known as Burgstall Schneggenroden, is a medieval castle in Essingen in the Ostalbkreis district.

In 1293, Schneggenroden Castle, which is said to have been built by Ernfried von Roden, was first mentioned in a document. In 1362, Ulrich von Roden, known as Sneggenroden, sold the castle for 590 pounds Heller to Friedrich von Westerstetten, known as Schauche. His son, Hans von Westerstetten, sold the castle in 1401 to Georg I. von Woellwarth. He passed it on in 1410 to his son Georg II, who probably had the castle rebuilt around 1434. In 1538, the castle was sold for 8500 guilders to the Woellwarth-Lauterburg line, in whose possession it still remains today. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was severely damaged and had to be renovated afterwards. Today, the castle is a working farm.
