Höhenrain Castle

The castle had been owned by the Knights of Höhenrain since about 1000 AD and was first mentioned in 1133. In 1483, Georg von Höhenrain inherited the Imperial Lordship of Waldeck from his maternal uncle, but died in 1487 as the last of his line. In 1536, ownership passed to Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria. In 1544, ownership passed to the Lords of Taufkirchen, who had the castle rebuilt. They held the property until 1683. After this, there was a lively change of ownership. These included Johann Georg Messerer from 1720-43; the Nobles von Kern, the Counts Khuen von Belasy and the Counts Arco-Zinneberg from 1743-1822.

In 1917, the Munich Association for Holiday Colonies acquired the castle. In 1977, the association sold the castle to Paul Holzfurtner, who restored it. Subsequently, antique exhibitions, concerts and art exhibitions took place there. Since the renewed sale of the castle, its future is uncertain.
