Hochberg Castle

Hochberg Castle is a complex founded in the Middle Ages and expanded into a castle in the 16th century, located in Remseck am Neckar in the Ludwigsburg district.

In the 13th century, the local nobility, the Lords of Hochberg-Hochdorf, are documented in Hochberg, who are believed to have built the medieval core of the castle. From 1300, the Lords of Nothaft succeeded the Lords of Hochberg-Hochdorf as owners. In 1593, under the direction of the Württemberg court architect Heinrich Schickhardt, the castle was expanded into the so-called New Castle, adding a four-story gatehouse and the southeastern main front, incorporating the stone house of the former castle. In 1779, the castle was expanded by Friedrich Eugen von Württemberg into a summer residence, and from 1781, it was used by the Dukes of Württemberg for hunting. In 1831, the castle was sold by Württemberg to the Ludwigsburg entrepreneur Nast, who established a lamp factory in the castle. In 1837, Caroline Countess von Marpalu bought the castle and sold it just four years later to the Württemberg foreign minister and privy legation councilor Karl Eugen von Hügel. The castle remained in the possession of the Hügel family until 1936, when it came into bourgeois ownership through forced auction.

From the time of the Nothaft, the wine press built in 1752 and the staff office building built in 1778 still exist. The wine press was used as such until its closure in 1917. In 1990 and 1991, it was renovated and converted into a community hall. The former staff office building served as the seat of the Hohenberg staff office from 1784 to 1821. Since 1821, the building has been a rectory.
