Hettingen Castle

Hettingen Castle can be traced back to a castle complex from the 11th century. It was situated in a dominant position on a rocky ridge east of the town (a 40-meter difference in elevation lies between the town center and the castle). The Counts of Gammertingen are named as the builders of the medieval castle complex around 1120. Today, only the high shield wall in the north and the gate entrance remain of the former medieval castle. The residential building of today's Hettingen Castle was built directly adjacent to it around 1720 by Baron Franz-Anton von Speth. After complete renovation and refurbishment from 1991 to 1994, the building, converted into a castle, now houses the town hall of Hettingen. During this process, paintings were uncovered, stucco ceilings were renewed, and the old oak staircase was preserved. Since 2004, the permanent exhibition "Architectures in Clay" by the artist Sybille Ritter can be seen in the south wing (former chapel). Art and cultural events take place twice a year, authors present their new books, and once a year on the last weekend of August, an open-air rock concert takes place in the castle garden.
