Hermersberg Castle

Hermersberg Castle stands on a plateau southwest of the town of Niedernhall in the Hohenlohe district and was probably built no later than the 15th century.

The former hunting lodge stands far from settlements and surrounded by meadows at about 350 m above sea level at the southwest end of an otherwise agriculturally used open plateau above the Kocher valley, which is 150 meters deeper to the north and slopes down over a wide forest belt to the Kupfer river to the southwest and its tributary Zimmerbach to the south. The farm buildings are located in the southwest of the complex, which is surrounded by a moat that is now only partially preserved in the south and west. Immediately to its east lies an artificial lake covering almost 0.9 ha.

The oldest parts of the castle, probably dating from the 15th century, are preserved in the east wing. In 1530/40, the round stair tower was added under Count Georg I of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein. Count Ludwig Kasimir added a long western wing, the current central wing, between 1551 and 1568, and also had the complex walled and a gate tower built in the west. In 1588, the half-timbered structure on the stair tower was renewed, in 1589 that of the connecting building, at the same time the fountain was redesigned, a garden was laid out and surrounded by the moat. From 1599–1610, the hall wing was built. In 1743, the horse stable was built in the north, replacing the shepherd's house which had already been demolished in 1706. In 1756, window frames with Nuremberg plate glass were installed by a cabinetmaker from Ingelfingen. In 1768, the stone bridge over the moat was built; it is questionable whether the intended replacement of the old ceiling in the hall with a coffered ceiling in 1777 actually took place. As part of larger repairs, a wooden staircase was installed on the first floor of the central building in 1794.
