Heidelberg Castle (Hohentannen)
Heidelberg Castle in the Thurgau village of Hohentannen was built as a country estate by Jakob Grubenmann and G. Held on behalf of Leonhard von Muralt-Egger between 1744 and 1745.
From 1830, Friedrich von Muralt ran a private educational institution in the castle. In 1901, the family sold the castle. It then changed hands several times and was a retirement home between 1976 and 1998. Today it is again used as a residential building.
The castle is located about three hundred meters south of the former Heidelberg Castle, which was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Heidelberg. The family was first mentioned in documents in 1137. The castle was destroyed by the Appenzellers in 1403.
