Heidegg Castle (Gelfingen)

The first mention of the Lords of Heidegg dates back to 1185. They initially served the Counts of Kyburg and later the Habsburgs. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the castle was built as part of a comprehensive wave of town and castle foundations in the Seetal, which was then an important traffic artery between Gotthard, Lucerne, and Basel. The Heidegg dominion encompassed extensive rights, including lower jurisdiction and the bailiwick over large parts of Lake Baldegg. At the end of the 15th century, Lucerne council families took over ownership. During the Reformation, the palas was converted into an artillery fort. In the late 17th century, the Pfyffer family extended the building into the current castle tower. In 1700, the city of Lucerne acquired the dominion. After the end of judicial rule in 1798, Heidegg became a state domain and was later auctioned off. In 1875, the couple Louis and Caroline Pfyffer von Heidegg-Slidell acquired the castle, redesigned it in the style of castle romanticism, and created a castle park. In 1950, the last descendants, Mathilde von Glutz and Marie-Louise de Chambrier, donated the castle to the Canton of Lucerne, which made it publicly accessible. Since 1995, the complex has undergone extensive renovation.

Heidegg Castle is located in Gelfingen, a village in the Hochdorf district in the Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland, at an altitude of approximately 547 m above sea level.

The castle can be visited by the public. It now houses a museum dedicated to the history of the castle and the surrounding region. The complex also includes a chapel, a residential building, a farmhouse, and a romantic park.
